Learning experience in disaster nursing

Disaster nursing is currently given importance worldwide. Japan has experienced varied and unique calamities, including earthquakes, tsunamis, volcano eruptions, and even a nuclear disaster. Through the lectures given by 正木先生 and 進藤先生, we were impressed by the methods for accurate data collection and scientific analysis, as well as the significance of precise disaster prediction. We understood how to use policies and strategies to manage consequences caused by disasters. To reach a consensus, all experts from various disciplines should communicate with one another more frequently. A nursing professional, as a coordinator, is expected to lead the conversation and to prepare for coping strategies applicable to all possible scenarios. We should learn from failures, and then reconstruct and strive for recovery in a humble manner. As the saying goes, hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

To realize the implications of disaster nursing, we were offered an opportunity to visit 常磐病院, 福島 with 山本先生, 錢先生, and two doctoral students. We were shown photos and stories that struck us as touching. Although the patients we encountered were fortunate to have found their way out, we should still consider their physical and psychological status to ensure their safety. Moreover, quick decision making is a crucial factor in their recovery. Undoubtedly, hospital and health professionals have provided the best and most important refuge for the victims. These precious experiences helped us understand how to deal with complicated situations when facing such a big disaster, which might happen in Taiwan in high probability.

We are very grateful for the kindness and warm hospitality shown in making all the arrangements. Importantly, we also appreciate Dean Miyazaki and Professor Masaki of the Graduate School of Nursing, Chiba University, for arranging this learning experience for us. This appreciation is more than we can describe.
