History

History of the School of Nursing

1974 An office to establish the School of Nursing was opened.
1975 Inauguration of the School of Nursing, with a capacity of 60 students.
The School was accredited for nursing education, and prospective graduates were qualified to take the national licensure examination for nurses.
1976 Construction of the school was completed.
1978 The School of Nursing received national accreditation in public health nursing and midwifery.
1979 Under the auspices of Chiba University Graduate School, the School of Nursing established the Graduate School of Nursing, with 15 students enrolled in the Master of Nursing degree program.
Graduate entry nursing program for students with associate degrees was introduced, with a capacity of 10 students.
1981 The School of Nursing was renovated and expanded.
1982 The School of Nursing received approval to increase the student capacity to 80. Under the auspices of the Japanese government, the School of Nursing established the Center for Education and Research in Nursing Practice as a national cooperative institution.
1983 The construction of the Center for Education and Research in Nursing Practice was completed.
1985 The School of Nursing celebrated its 10th Anniversary.
1988 The School of Nursing received approval to increase the undergraduate student capacity to 85.
1990 The School of Nursing completed an exchange agreement with the School of Nursing at the University of Alabama, Birmingham.
1993 The School of Nursing received financial support from Chiba Bank to open the Division of Family Nursing (1993-1997).
Under the auspices of Chiba University Graduate School, the Graduate School of Nursing launched the Doctor of Nursing Science degree, with a capacity of 9 students.
With the start of the Doctoral Program, the departments were reorganized: 11 departments were unified into 4 departments covering 12 specialty areas. The capacity of the Master's Program was increased to 25 students.
The admission of working students, in response to the reformation of the national standards for graduate schools, was initiated.
1994 The School of Nursing received approval to admit applicants with work experience to the Undergraduate Program.
1995 The School of Nursing celebrated its 20th Anniversary. The School also received accreditation for school health nursing (Type 1 certificate).
1996 The School of Nursing completed an exchange agreement with the University of Michigan School of Nursing.
1998 The undergraduate student capacity was reduced to 80. The School of Nursing started the exchange program in Transcultural Nursing with the University of Alabama Capstone College of Nursing.
2000 The School of Nursing established the Division of Visiting Nursing within the Department of Community Health Nursing.
2001 The Master's Courses in Cancer Nursing and Gerontological Nursing for Clinical Nurse Specialists were accredited by the Japanese Association of Nursing Programs in University.
2002 The Graduate School introduced a three-year Master's Program in Nursing Systems Management, with a student capacity of 6.
2003 The Graduate School of Nursing was selected as one of the 21st Century Centers of Excellence by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT). Numerous studies related to culturally oriented nursing were produced with the establishment of“The Center for Creation and Dissemination of new Japanese Nursing Science and Culturally Appropriate Care: Establishment and Development of Nursing Science and Arts Based on Clinical Knowledge”(five-year funding).
2004 All National Universities were transformed into National University Corporations.
The Master's Course in Maternity Nursing for Clinical Nurse Specialists was accredited by the Japanese Association of Nursing Programs in University.
2005 The School of Nursing celebrated its 30th Anniversary.
The Master's Program in Child Health Nursing for Clinical Nurse Specialists was accredited by the Japanese Association of Nursing Programs in University.
The Training Course for Certified Expert Nurse in Breast Cancer Nursing was established by a grant from the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation.
2006 “Assignment Project to Develop Competencies in Nursing Management”was adopted as one of the“University Education Reform Grant for Good Practice (GP)”by MEXT.
2007 The three-year Master's Program in Nursing Systems Management was expanded to include the Division of Long Term Care Facilities Nursing Systems Management, and the capacity increased to 9, which was an increase of 3 students.
The Doctoral Program in Nursing was expanded to include Nursing Pathology and Nursing Administration, and the capacity increased to 12, which was an increase of 3 students.
Three educational projects were funded by MEXT.
  1. Support Program for Improving Graduate School Education: “Fostering Program for Certified Nurse Specialist”(3 years)
  2. Good Practice for Contemporary Educational Needs: “Educational Program for Training Autonomous Healthcare Professionals: Human Resource Training emphasizing Interprofessional Collaboration”(3 years)
  3. “Contract Program to Promote Education for the Retraining Needs of Working Nurses: Development of retraining program to support nurses who want to be reemployed as visiting nurses”(3 years)
2009 The Master's Program in Psychiatric Nursing for Clinical Nurse Specialists was accredited by the Japanese Association of Nursing Programs in University.
2010 The Center for Education and Research in Nursing Practice(CERNP) was accredited the first Joint Usage/Research Center in Nursing Education by MEXT. CERNP was founded by MEXT and has been involved in a project called “Bridging Education, Research and Practice: Develop of a program for structural reform in Nursing” (2010-2015).
The School of Nursing received financial support from the Nippon Foundation to open a course for End of Life Care Nursing Science (2010-2015).
2011 CERNP was founded by MEXT on a new project to construct a Mother Map of Faculty Development in Nursing Education and to Promote Collaborative Activities between Universities (2011-2016).
The Graduate School of Nursing completed an exchange agreement with the University of San Diego Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science, CA, USA.
2012 The Master's Program of Nursing System Management was expanded to include two divisions which were Nursing Administration & Evaluation and Continuing Education & Policy management in Nursing. The student's capacity increased to 12.
CERNP celebrated its 30th Anniversary.
The Graduate School of Nursing was received the international students exchange program (SSSV: short-stay and short-visit) foundation by MEXT.
2014 Disaster Nursing Global Leader Degree Program (DNGL) had the first two graduate students to the first intercurricular, joint doctoral of five universities in Japan.
2019 the curriculums of two nursing specialties (cancer nursing and pediatric nursing) in the Nursing Science Master’s Program in the Graduate School of Nursing were certified for advanced practice nurses (Certified Nurse Specialist: 38 credits).
2021 Student recruitment for the Graduate Entry Nursing Program was suspended since the 2021 academic year.
