Bridging among Education, Research and Practice

Project to develop a program for structural reform in nursing

The Center for Education and Research in Nursing Practice of the Graduate School of Nursing of Chiba University has been involved since 2010 in a project called "Bridging among Education, Research and Practice and CQI (Continuous Quality Improvement) in Nursing Education: Development of a program for structural reform in nursing".

This project was started to deal with the lack of sufficient numbers of facilities for fieldwork at a university level and teachers of nursing practice, problems that are associated with the current need for a higher level of nursing education and a sudden increase in the number of nursing schools.

These issues are closely tied to the nursing practice ability of nursing students and the decreased functionality of programs to cultivate the next generation of nurses. There is a danger that a vicious cycle is being created of increasing numbers of new nurses leaving the profession → exhaustion of the backbone of the nursing force → collapse of the system → even lesser numbers of facilities for practical training and lesser numbers of teachers of nursing practice.

This vicious cycle is a problem of the system, not of personal issues related to studying or problem solving at the individual level. We believe this issue must be addressed by implementing structural reform in personnel training, which is why this project is so important.

Goals To develop programs at facilities involved in field practice that carry out structural reform by coordinating education, research and practice.Through such programs, nurses will strengthen their uniqueness and professionalism. Structural reform will help to solve the structural problems of clinical nursing and establish a better environment for nursing education.
Framework
  1. Promotion of nursing practice research
    1. development of a reflective framework that makes the uniqueness and professionalism of nursing visual
    2. development of tools for the diagnosis and evaluation of coordination between nursing education and practice for the Japanese contexts
  2. Development of programs to support the cultivation of nursing professionals
  3. Implementation of training projects that support structural reform
  4. Collection, analysis and dissemination of data and information

Project to construct a mother map of faculty development in nursing education and to promote collaborative activities between universities and CQI (Continuous Quality Improvement) in Nursing Education

The Collaborative Center for Development of Nursing Practice, Education and Research, Chiba University has been working on a project to construct a mother map of faculty development in nursing education and to promote collaborative activities between universities since 2011. This project will develop a master plan of faculty development (FD) (called FD mother map) and a database for FD planning to keep pace with progress towards higher levels of professionalism and a more highly educated university-based student body. By constructing a system that allows universities to share the FD mother map, the project will support systematic planning, implementation and evaluation of effective FD programs based on the characteristics of nursing education at the highest level at each institution of nursing education at the university level.

We will continue to carry out collaborative efforts that promote training in faculty development (FD) for educators, staff development (SD) for nursing administrators and nursing professionals in the field, and private universities, hospitals and health & medical institutions. Starting in 2010,with a special grant for MEXT for improvement of training for advanced specialized professionals and excellence in education and research, we will roll out a projects for the development of programs for structural reform in nursing education through bridging among education, research and practice. These projects are going to the advanced stage with another special grant from MEXT for promoting Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) in Nursing Education.
