International Collaborative Activity

COIL at the School of Nursing, Chiba University

As part of the “Global Health and Nursing II” course, Chiba University School of Nursing has established mutual exchange programs with numerous universities abroad. In particular, Chiba University School of Nursing has cultivated strong ties with the Capstone College of Nursing at the University of Alabama for over 20 years. Since 2018, Chiba University School of Nursing and the Capstone College of Nursing have started a Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) module that is added to the existing exchange program. This module offers Japanese and American students the opportunity to collaborate on various nursing-related tasks using a variety of internet-based tools such as video chats or photo/video/text messaging. It is designed to further discussions and exchanges of ideas between the two cultures without actually going abroad. Through COIL, we expect students to 1) hone their intercultural communication skills and 2) develop their critical understanding of the social determinants of maternal/newborn health.
