Implementation Structure

a.Management and Faculty Structure for the Initiative

The IPE Promotion Committee consisting of faculty members from the three undergraduate schools is established to handle the management of this program’s design, planning, project management/arrangement, and evaluation. The committee coordinates with each undergraduate school as needed such as assigning instructors and teaching assistants by work with the Academic Affairs Committee in each respective undergraduate school. pdficon_small Provisions for the Inohana IPE Promotion Committeecan be found here.

Since we expect a considerable amount of tasks involved in the development, implementation, and verification of methods to evaluate the education as well as the faculty development (FD) and staff development (SD) under b. Support Structure below, we have created a framework for the initiative to drive and realize the details planned by the IPW Promotion Committee.

b.Support Structure

After first obtaining cooperation from our university hospital as a practical training facility, we are driving the initiative by coordinating with the units such as the Health Professional Development Center, Nursing Department, and Pharmacy Department within the hospital.
In addition, since there is a considerable number of individuals who are involved in this program, including faculty members at each undergraduate school, teaching assistants, and partners (professionals) at practical training facilities, it is essential to have them to fully understand the aim of this program and improve their ability to teach IPW. Therefore, we have established a framework in which the IPERC designs and implement faculty development (FD) and staff development (SD).

c.Partnering Outside of the University

(1) Partnering with medical institutions within Chiba Prefecture: As practical training facilities for this program, we are developing a model IPE community within Chiba Prefecture in addition to Chiba University Hospital and partnering with medical institutions outside of the university. By doing so, we will secure the structure for implementing this program and build a system that can help practitioners to developing skills related IPW.
(2) Partnering and networking with other universities: We will regularly hold exchanges with other Japanese and foreign university bases that work on IPE to build a network. By doing so, we will turn our framework into the one that can contribute to building theories and developing methodologies for IPE which is still under development.

FD/SD

The Inohana IPE Promotion Committee holds information sessions for instructors who teach the exercise and practical training in order to have them understand and confirm their role as instructor and the method for supporting students in achieving learning objectives.

Inohana IPE develops students’ ability to practice IPW through hands-on learning such as group works with a small number of students, exercise, and practical training. For this reason, we have many individuals outside of the university to cooperate as instructors teach classes, particularly exercise and practical training in addition to faculty members.

The Inohana IPE Promotion Committee holds information sessions for instructors who teach the exercise and practical training in order to have them understand and confirm their role as instructor and the method for supporting students in achieving learning objectives. We continuously assess the content and method of such information sessions so that those sessions will provide the Inohana IPE participants themselves opportunities for faculty development (FD) and staff development (SD) to master skills for facilitation, consultation, and practice teaching as well as opportunities to rethink IPW at each facility.

FD/SD in Fiscal Year 2013

FD for faculty acting as facilitator in Step 1 “Reviewing the Hands-on Practical Training”
Time and Date: 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM on May 22, 2013 (Wed)
Place: Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences Lecture Hall 11
Objective: To have participants understand and acknowledge the schematics of Inohana IPE and this class, the role of instructor, and the objective and method of facilitation in order for them to become capable of providing appropriate support for students to achieve study objectives
Target audience: Faculty members of School of Medicine, School of Nursing, and Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences who will serve as facilitator in reviewing the Hands-on Practical Training, as well as faculty members and graduate students who are interested in IPE.
Content: 1. Fill out the pre-session survey, 2. Overview of Step 1 and study objectives, 3. Course organization, 4. Method of facilitation and student evaluation, 5. How to actually facilitate group work, 6. Additional information, 7. O&A, and 8. Fill out the post-session survey
Results: Faculty members who participated were able to understand the schematics of Inohana IPE and this course as well as their role and share the method for supporting and evaluating the study as facilitator.

Information Session for the instructors for the Field Visit Practical Training in Step 2
Time and Date: 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM on May 23, 2013 (Thurs)
Place: School of Medicine Lecture Room 2
Target Audience: Professionals at Chiba University Hospital and facilities outside of the university who will teach practical training the Field Visit Practical Training under Inohana IPE Step 2, as well as professionals, faculty members, and graduate students who are interested in IPE.
Objective: To have participants to understand the schematics of Inohana IPE and this course as well as the role of practical training instructor and share the method for supporting students to achieve learning objectives. Also to provide an opportunity to rethink IPW at each facility.
Content: 1.Fill out the pre-session survey, 2. Overview of Inohana IPE and Step 2, 3. Field Visit Practical Training and the role of practical training instructor, 4. How well students are instructed and prepared, 5. Additional information, 6. Q&A, and 7. Fill out the post-session survey
Results: This session is intended for practical training instructors outside of the university. They were able to understand the schematics of Inohana IPE and this course as well as the role of practical training instructor and share the methods for supporting and evaluating the study. It also became an opportunity for them to reaffirm the need for IPW. Furthermore, we were able to confirm high expectation for Inohana IPE through the Q&A.

Information Session for the instructors for the Consultation with Professionals in Step 4
Time and Date: 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM on September 6, 2013 (Fri)
Place: Chiba University Hospital Clinical Skills Center Lecture Room 2
Objective: To have participants understand the schematics of Inohana IPE and this course, the role of exercise instructor, and the objective and method of consultation in order to enable them to provide appropriate support to students in achieving learning objectives. Also to provide an opportunity to rethink IPW at each facility.
Target audience: Chiba University Hospital medical professionals and faculty members from the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, and Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences who will teach the exercise, as well as faculty members and graduate students who are interested in IPE.
Content: 1. Fill out the pre-session survey, 2. About Inohana IPE and Step 4, 3. Role of the instructor for Consultation with Professionals and the level of students, 4. About consultation, 5. Additional information, 6. Q&A, and 7. Fill out the post-session survey
Results: The participants were able to understand the schematics of Inohana IPE and this exercise as well as the role of instructor and share the method to support learning. It also became an opportunity for them to reaffirm the need for consultation among professionals and IPW that can be utilized in everyday work as professional.
